Hermanus, in the heart of the Overberg, offers the complete lifestyle package, from beautiful coastal houses to pristine blue flag beaches. It boasts some of the best land-based whale watching in the world, plus it’s home to one of the most beautiful wine routes in South Africa; the Hemel en Aarde. Couple this with pristine beaches, indigenous nature, and a thriving community for a holiday you’ll never forget.
Like any coastal town worth its salt, Hermanus holds regular markets for foodies and families alike.
The Hermanus Country Market
Over the years this market has grown exponentially in popularity. Initially it was a farmers’ market where you could buy fresh produce, eggs and dairy. These days it’s evolved to also include arts and crafts, beer and wine stands, as well as a variety of food. There’s a safe space for the kiddies to play while the adults relax over craft beer and bratwurst.
Every Saturday morning at the Hermanus Cricket Club (summer: 8am to 12pm; winter: 9am to 1pm).
Food and Wine Market at Hermanuspietersfontein
Hosted in the courtyard of winery Hermanuspietersfontein, this is just the spot to kick off Saturday. Unwind with a bottle of wine and a selection of cheese, or go straight for the oysters and bubbly. Hot breakfast and hot coffee are also available should you wish to start off a bit more slowly. Remember to bring your shopping bag for the artisan goods; from chocolate, to bread, to charcuterie. This market is super family friendly, and the enclosed courtyard will give parents peace of mind.
Every Saturday morning at Hermanuspietersfontein Winery in the Hemel en Aarde Village, from 9am to 1pm.
Onrus Craft Market
The Onrus Craft Market is just like the craft markets you remember from childhood. Shop for white elephants, tuck into home-made confectionaries and socialize with the locals. There are often activities and games for the kids too.
First Saturday morning of each month at the De Wet Hall in Roos Street, from 9am.
Sunset Market in Stanford
Stanford is a charming village located a mere 20 minutes from Hermanus. Journey to the Village Green for a Sunset Market on the last Friday of every month and watch the sky turn pink with a glass of wine in-hand. There’s plenty to do for grown-ups and children both, from impromptu soccer matches, to wine barrel rolling competitions. Come hungry as Stanford’s finest fare is on offer too.
The Village Green from 6pm on the last Friday of every month.
Fisherman’s Village Craft Market
No visit to Hermanus is complete without a trip to the Fisherman’s Village Craft Market. The market is as iconic as the town’s whale crier; and in season you’ll often see him traversing the square. Pick up locally made souvenirs, arts and crafts, and other lifestyle items.
Lemm’s Corner, Saturday and Sunday from 8:30am to 3pm.
