The Arabella Country Estate, near Hermanus, has upgraded its irrigation system, fine tuned and improved holes, introduced excellent outdoor leisure pursuits, such as hiking trails and canoeing to complement the tennis courts and the indoor luxury of the hotel’s spa.
The splendid luxurious hotel, now under Protea Hotels’ management, is enjoying high occupancies and real estate sales have quadrupled over the past two years. A notable trend also is that many younger families are the buyers – perhaps due to the lifestyle, security, green belt area and good schools.
The main draw card remains the scenically beautiful golf course bordering South Africa’s largest lagoon. The golf experience begins on both nines with an uphill challenge (the only two holes that are markedly uphill) and the undulating character of the terrain allows for constant and breathtakingly beautiful views to be part of the whole experience. The focus on the holes is made memorable by the clever use of the local water features, the most invigorating of these being the closing two holes on the front nine and the finishing four on the second nine. My favourite hole on this course is the par 5, 8th Hole – unforgettable!
The golf estates’ property is located within the Transitional zone of the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve and the adjacent Bot River Lagoon, which is a designated Buffer zone of the Biosphere Reserve.
